History
1946 Original organization starts as group of 30 magazine and advertising companies, with the aim of addressing magazine-ad rate regulations in postwar environment of chaotic prices.
1952 We become the Japan Magazine Advertising Society, dedicated to the mission of promoting communication and goodwill among magazine and advertising companies.
1957 We establish an Ethics Investigative Committee, and promotion of ethical standards within the industry becomes our top priority.
1958 We establish our "Japan Magazine Advertising Awards," with the goal of promoting higher quality in magazine advertisements.
1962 Our first overseas observation team goes abroad.
1963 Major magazine companies register with the Japan Audit Bureau of Circulations, a major development toward establishing the credibility of magazines within Japan.
1969 We undertake a comprehensive nationwide survey aimed at establishing a sound basis for evaluating the functionality of magazines within Japan.
1970 We designate November 5 (which falls within Japan's annual Book Week) as Magazine Advertising Day, and begin campaigning to support it.
1971 Our 25th anniversary. We enact our first version of Magazine Advertising Acceptance Standards, as we renew our efforts to promote ethics in the industry.
1973 We set up a Magazine Advertisement Review Committee, and select monitors.
1974 We establish ourselves as a public-service corporation, and change our name to Japan Magazine Advertising Association (JMAA).
1975 We publish Magazine Advertising: Ethics and Practice and Creating Perfect Drafts for Magazine Ads.
1981 We publish Dazzling Pages, a handbook about the advantages of magazine advertising.
1987 We establish our International Committee, and begin activities to promote advertisement for imported products.
1988 We plan major PR offensives, and we publish Thirty Years of Ethics Promotion in Magazine Advertising and Eleven Chapters on Magazine Advertising.
1996 We publish 50 Years at JMAA, commemorating our 50th anniversary.
1999 We publish a greatly revised version of our Magazine Advertising Placement Standards.
2000 At the request of the China Periodicals Association, we visit China for the first time, where we hold lectures about magazine advertising and plan for further exchanges.
2001 We establish our website.
2004 We establish Magazine Advertisement Digital Distribution Promotion Conference.
2005 We develop "Guidelines on Magazine Advertising and Personal Information Protection."
2006 We aim to unify magazine category for the industry
2006 We publish Magazine Advertising Handbook: Kizuna (Ties), commemorating our 60th anniversary
2007 We celebrate the 50th anniversary for the "Japan Magazine Advertising Awards."
