Japan Magazine Ad Awards: Purpose and History
Purpose
JMAA, with the backing of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, is pleased to present awards for excellence in magazine advertising.
The purpose of these awards is to promote higher quality throughout the industry, to enhance the functioning of magazine ads as a societal information resource, and thereby to make a positive contribution to the development of Japanese industry, economy, society, and culture.
History
Japan Magazine Advertisement Awards were established in 1958.
With the aim of streamlining operations, nomination submission requirements were introduced in June of 1965, and these have since been revised each year as necessary.
In 1975 Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) established MITI prizes in both the multicolor and monochrome award divisions. In 1991, the JMAA Awards were established. Because of the decline in monochrome printing, 1991 also saw the discontinuation of the division-2 monochrome print categories and the MITI monochrome prize. In 2001, in line with reorganization of government ministries, the "MITI" prize became the "METI" (Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry) prize.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Japan Magazine Advertisement Awards, in 2007 JMAA also established "Awards for Creators," which are given to the creators of the METI prize-winning products.
